Performance Grade Bitumen

What is Performance Grade (PG) Bitumen?

Road surfaces need to survive all kinds of weather.

Because of this, experts created Performance Grade asphalt, which people call PG bitumen.

Unlike older systems, this method organizes asphalt by how well it works in different weather conditions.

It strictly follows global industrial rules like ASTM D6373 and AASHTO M 320-10.

How Older Grading Systems Worked

In the past, engineers grouped asphalt using two main features:

How hard it is when tested at 25°C.
How thick and sticky it becomes at 60°C and 135°C.

However, researchers soon realized that these numbers forgot a huge factor: the weather.

The PG system uses two numbers to explain a climate zone.

Let us look at PG 58-28 as a simple example:

The first number (58) is the highest heat the road can handle during the hottest week of summer.
The second number (-28) is the freezing point the road can survive during the coldest week of winter.

If temperatures go past these limits, the pavement might crack or deform.

Popular PG Grades from Royal Bitumen

Different projects need different temperature ranges to build long-lasting roads.

To meet these needs, Royal Bitumen provides a wide variety of standard and modified options.

we product list includes reliable choices for softer, cold-weather climates as well as very tough, heat-resistant options:
